A pregnant woman is lucky to be alive after a piece of debris smashed through her car's windshield on Toronto's Gardiner Expressway Saturday afternoon.
Emergency vehicles rushed to the scene just after 1 p.m. to find that a truck's leaf spring had shot through the windshield, hitting the steering wheel. Police who responded to the incident called what they saw "unbelievable." If the piece of a truck's suspension had crashed into the tiny Mini Cooper a few inches away, the woman driver and her unborn child could have been killed. The victim was visibly shaken and upset by her near miss. Her name is not known. Paramedics immediately placed a collar around her neck to prevent spinal cord injuries. But after a hospital examination, the only injury she suffered was a scrape on her cheek. A female passenger was also in the car when the steel spring came crashing through. She was unharmed. Police are investigating the incident. They are looking for the vehicle that originally had the leaf spring attached. Investigators believe it was either a truck or trailer because the spring was nearly a metre in length. The incident closed the Yonge and York Street exit from the Gardiner Expressway while police and emergency crews were on the scene.
